Marina Bay Sands is where many first-time and visiting diners look for omakase — the resort’s restaurants are polished, convenient and full of occasion. If that is what you are after, you will be well looked after there. But a growing number of Singapore’s most devoted sushi diners quietly make the ten-minute journey the other way, to a chef-owned counter in the greenery of Dempsey Hill.
Two very different rooms
The best-known omakase at Marina Bay Sands is Wakuda — a large, design-forward restaurant and sake bar bearing the name of the celebrated Chef Tetsuya Wakuda, with a dedicated omakase room. It is modern Japanese on a grand scale, inside one of the city’s most recognisable resorts.
MIYU is the counterpoint. At 13A Dempsey Road, the room seats only a handful of guests, and Executive Chef-Owner Ng Kam Kwan works the counter himself — more than 22 years of Japanese training, including at Hide Yamamoto and Kacyo, brought to a focused Edomae sitting. Fish is air-flown from Japan each week, the shari is seasoned with care, and each course follows shun, the peak season of the ingredient. There is no resort around it; only the quiet of Dempsey Hill.
On price, read the fine print
Entry prices at the Bay and at MIYU can look similar on paper. The difference is often in how they are quoted. Resort menus are usually listed “++” — before ten percent service and prevailing GST — which adds meaningfully to the final bill. MIYU quotes sincere prices: lunch omakase from $128 and dinner from $228. What you read is close to what you pay, and the value shows in the fish rather than the surroundings. Verified diners rate MIYU 5.8/6 on Quandoo and 4.6/5 on Google.
Ten minutes from the Bay
Dempsey Hill is an easy hop from Marina Bay and the CBD — roughly ten to fifteen minutes by taxi or private hire, with complimentary parking once you arrive. It makes MIYU a natural choice for a business lunch away from the crowds, or an unhurried dinner after a day in the city. If you are staying near the Bay and want an omakase that feels like a discovery rather than a landmark, the short drive is the whole point.
